Do you really know what Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is?

Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans are renowned for their balanced acidity and lack of bitterness, making them recognized as one of the finest coffees in the world. They are beloved by those with sensitive stomachs and are highly popular in Japan, where 70% to 80% of Blue Mountain coffee beans are exported.

Today, we'll explore what makes Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans unique. We'll delve into their history, harvesting methods, flavor profiles, and also discuss how not to be deceived when purchasing these amazing coffee beans.

🧐 What is Blue Mountain coffee? Blue Mountain coffee beans belong to the Arabica variety and grow in the Blue Mountains of eastern Jamaica. You can find them in coffee plantations in the regions of Saint Andrew, Saint Thomas, Portland, and Saint Mary, all sharing the geographical features of the Blue Mountains.

🖌 Although the Blue Mountains reach elevations of up to 2,256 meters, officially certified Blue Mountain coffee beans can only be grown within the range of 910 to 1,700 meters.

🔻 Coffee beans grown below 910 meters are labeled as "Jamaican Supreme Coffee" or "Jamaican Low Mountain Coffee." 🔻 When grown above 1,700 meters, they are referred to as "Jamaican High Mountain Coffee."

The climate and soil of the Blue Mountains are highly conducive to producing high-quality coffee beans, but their rugged terrain makes coffee cultivation more challenging.

🧐 History of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee (Feel free to skip if you're not into history) In 1723, during the reign of King Louis XV of France, a ship carrying three Arabica coffee trees sailed to the Caribbean, with only one surviving the journey to the French colony of Martinique.

Five years later, in 1728, former Governor Nicholas Lawes planted this coffee tree on the fertile land of Saint Andrew in Jamaica. Over the following years, coffee production flourished. By 1814, Jamaica had over 600 active coffee plantations.

😫😫 Dark Side of Blue Mountain Coffee History (Even if you're not into history, you should read this) The history of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans has had its unfortunate side. Like coffee planted in other parts of the world, Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans were tainted by the institution of slavery. 🔺Sam Sharpe Rebellion On December 25, 1831, the Sam Sharpe Rebellion erupted. He was a enslaved Baptist deacon who led an 11-day uprising. His aim was to secure wages and greater freedom for the enslaved akin to those of farm laborers. The rebellion, also known as the Baptist War, was the largest in the history of the British West Indies. Unfortunately, many lives were lost during the uprising. 🧐 Harvesting Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee While the soil of the Blue Mountains is fertile, its geographical features pose some challenges for coffee growers. Operating large machinery on the mountainside is impractical, so much of the work must be done by hand. Harvesting must be done in stages to ensure only ripe coffee cherries are picked. The coffee beans are then transported to central processing centers. 🧐 Processing Methods of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee Initially, the processing conditions for Blue Mountain coffee were very strict, producing only coffee beans processed by the washed method. However, by 2020, Blue Mountain coffee beans processed by the natural sun-drying method were introduced for the first time. Nevertheless, the volume of coffee beans produced using this method is extremely limited. 🧐 Flavor Profile of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee Describing the flavor of coffee beans is often more poetic than precise. However, Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is generally considered to be balanced, with a full body, mild acidity, creamy taste, and very little bitterness. It has a slight sweetness with aromas of cocoa, brown spices, light floral notes, and citrus. Ultimately, choosing the right coffee for your taste is highly subjective, so choose based on your preferences.
